Specialist Departments

Our Dyslexia Centre pupils study every subject. In Reading, Spelling and Maths, dyslexic children need much reinforcement; this makes it difficult to predict accurately exactly what ground we will cover in Literacy and Numeracy. We therefore supply this information retrospectively at the end of each term.

The Moon Hall approach is to enable children to master basic Language and Maths skills to a point where they can achieve their potential in a normal classroom, if necessary with continuing additional support. Specialist tuition in very small groups enables us to address the needs of the individual child.

Our English staff are specialists in their field. They are entirely conversant with highly structured multi-sensory remedial programmes - based on the work of leading dyslexia theorists. We offer a full English course, based on the National Curriculum, incorporating the "Phono-Graphix" system of teaching reading and spelling. The programme enables us to address the difficulties of phonology which dyslexic people experience. Additionally, it allows our pupils to access the English language code with relative speed.

We believe in looking after the whole child and do everything we can to help him or her perform efficiently in all ways - intellectually and physically. To this end we have access to:

  • Speech and Language therapy.  From September 2007: a Speech and Language department under Mrs Rebecca Clark (Specialist Speech and Language Therapist)  We are able to provide assessments and a range of programmes for pupils depending upon their needs.
  • A visiting occupational therapist
  • A visiting optometrist
  • A visiting doctor to conduct audiology tests
  • The "Ansua Programme" of exercises
  • "Hand Gym" exercises to help handwriting and fine motor control.
